Stories related to Healthcare & Workplace Violence Sept. 16, 2010 – Baltimore, MD – Shooting at John Hopkins Hospital leaves 2 dead and 1 injured Tragedy struck the world-famous John Hopkins Hospital on Thursday morning, after a gunman shot a doctor, killed his own mother and then killed himself. According to a nurse, the shooting happened after the man got upset with hospital staff over the medical treatment his mom was receiving. According to a recent article over at nydailynews.com by Helen Kennedy, once the gunman had shot at the doctor, who is expected to live despite taking a bullet in the chest, he barricaded himself in his mom’s hospital room, just as a SWAT team was preparing to take the suspect down. Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said that the doctor, identified as David Cohen, was in surgery and is going to be ok. The shooting is said to have taken place on the eight floor of the Nelson building, which was then put on lockdown while portions of it were evacuated. Respiratory care nurse Jacqueline Billy, who was on the seventh floor, said that she fled to an elevator when she heard the shooting. However, instead of going down she accidentally went up to the eighth floor and when the doors opened, she was met with a group of cops with guns. |
