HEALTHCARE
INTRUDER RESPONSE
(4 & 8 hour variations)
The objectives & topics covered are to provide healthcare
leadership, management, security and front line personnel with
information and strategies on recognizing and responding to
the dynamic challenges and issues violent incidents create within
the healthcare workplace.
Typically the question asked is when discussing whether or not
to prepare for the remote possibility of an unauthorized intruder
in the workplace is this, “Since it’s not likely
to occur, is this something we should really spend time and
resources preparing for?” Another question that is sometimes
asked after this is “What are the costs of doing something?”
This is really the 3rd question that should be asked. The question
to ask prior to this question is “What are the costs of
doing NOTHING?” When answering these questions we must
look at the decision making matrix for assessing risk and what
should drive the decision on whether or not to prepare in advance.
-
FIRST
– “FREQUENCY”
What is the likelihood of the event occurring?
-
SECOND
– “IMPACT”
If the event were to occur what would the impact be to our
workplace culture? And how does “preparing in advance”
assist in either preventing the event or mitigating the impact
the event, it if were to occur.
REMEMBER:
From a lay persons point of view “liability” is
measured via a 2-step process
-
Can
a reasonable person determine that a particular event could
occur at some point?
-
If
so, what “responsible preparation” has been taken
to prepare for this particular event?
The
overall goal of this portion of the training program is to provide
the course participant with guiding principles and strategies
to recognize behavioral pre-cursors to threatening & potentially
violent incidents.
